A Good Night's Sleep Requires A Good Mattress

Few things are more important than a good night's sleep. And nothing is more important for ensuring that sleep than a good mattress. Without it, you'll wake up feeling cranky and irritable. Maybe you'll feel tired throughout the day. Worst case scenario is back and disc problems.

Sure you're getting older, but if you wake up feeling like you've aged 10 years overnight, don't be so quick to place the blame on your aging body. Your aging mattress could be at fault. Your body needs proper support while at rest, and only a good mattress can provide that support. Instead of feeling 10 years older, you just might wake up feeling years younger.

You mattress essentially counters the effects of gravity by providing the support you need. The method of support is dependent on the type of mattress you use. The typical mattress will use inner spring coils to counter the pull of gravity by providing lift. Pockets of air provide that support in an aerobed, and of course a waterbed mattress is filled with water to support the body. More recent technology has given us the tempur mattress. These are made from visco foam and are designed to respond to both body weight and body heat. They conform to our body for full support..

Each type of mattress has its advantages. The mattress that uses inner spring coils is a dependable and long lasting source of support. And the comfort level is adjustable simply by changing the amount of padding and using different fabrics for the covering. How soft or firm the mattress is does not have much affect on the support level since just about any high quality innerspring system is the same among different beds.

A soft bed, for example, can provide as much support as a firmer one. The amount of soft material placed on top of the springs would be the only difference between the two. However with some manufacturers, how much a mattress will cost really does affect the support system. That's because they vary the coil count. A mattress that costs more will likely provide more support by adding more coils.

But there is more to consider than just coil count. Stearns and Foster mattresses for example have a relatively low coil count in every mattress they produce, no matter what the cost. However a heavier weight metal is used in making those coils. The result is more support with fewer coils. So the simple way to sift through this process is to understand that almost any name brand innerspring mattress will use a quality support system. Your choice should be based on the firmness or softness you like best.

The aerobed, as we already mentioned, gives support and comfort at the same time by using air. The more air in the chamber, the more firm the mattress will be. As an added bonus, some models allow the firmness to be set at different levels on opposite sides of the bed. Sleep partners can now select their own unique comfort level.

A waterbed is much like the aerobed. It uses a similar system except of course the air is replaced by water. However in a waterbed mattress, firmness is created by using baffles which reduce the sag and motion that was common in the older water balloon models. Another recent change in the waterbed mattress is that it is designed to look like the standard mattress. It will now fit in standard bed frames and thus standard model sheets and comforters. It wasn't that long ago that you needed specially sized sheets if you purchased a waterbed.

The visco foam mattress is a newer choice in mattresses. It is a manmade material that eliminated pressure points by using body weight and heat to conform to the body. The material was originally developed for use by astronauts. By conforming to the body, this mattress causes less tossing and turning resulting in a more peaceful sleep. The cost of these mattresses however is a major factor. If you get a lower cost model you get less support. That's because a less dense foam is used.

The bottom line is simple - by increasing the support you give your body at night you'll get a more restful night's sleep no matter what type of mattress you select. You'll wake up with your body feeling rejuvenated, and you'll feel years younger. And that's something we all want.
