Sleeping On A Space Age Memory Foam Mattress
Way too many people toss and turn throughout the night simply trying to find that one comfortable position. Countless others feel like their joints might snap under their weight. If this describes you, perhaps you'll want to try the new tempur foam mattress.
Visco-elastic foam (sometimes called memory foam) was first developed by space program engineers in America. It's purpose was to absorb the pressure that is felt by an astronaut during lift-off. It worked well enough that soon hospitals were designing tempur foam mattresses for bedridden patients. They loved them. So much so that soon patients were asking for a similar mattress for their home.
The first to appear was the Tempurpedic Mattress. If there is a gold standard of memory foam, this is it. There are now several Tempurpedic comfort levels to select from. The thickness of the supportive core layer will range from 3 to 6 inches. As the core layer gets thicker, the support becomes more firm. Also, the thickness of the layers of memory foam will also vary. When the memory foam layer is thicker, the mattress will feel more cushiony and plush.
Another brand of memory foam mattress is Dormia. This company prides itself in offering high quality mattresses with additional features. Every mattress has all natural fibers in the coverings and a thick latex mattress as the core. Three zones make up the latex core. They provide firmer support for the hips and back and the feet and head are given softer support. On top of the memory foam layer, A Dormia mattress has padding layer of New Zealand wool. The purpose of this wool is to allow for cooler sleeping in the summer and warmer sleeping during the winter.
The other distinct feature of a Dormia mattress is the way the box spring is constructed. Wider boards and harder woods are used. And they are assembled in Pennsylvania by the Amish who are known for their high quality workmanship.
The memory foam mattress has become so popular that just about every major manufacturer has included at least one model in their line-up. Sealy, Serta, and Simmons all include a memory foam mattress in their offerings. Consumers love the tempur material so much that more and more independent manufacturers are appearing in show rooms and on the Internet. A quick search will reveal names like Angel Beds, Memory Foam Factory, Bragada and Absolute Comfort. All will claim their bed is every bit as good at a Tempurpedic but at a lower cost.
Some of these lower cost mattresses will use material comparable to a Tempurpedic. But others mattresses will use a lower density tempur material. Lower density means the mattress offers less support. I know it's cliche buy be careful of any mattress that has a price that seems too good to be true.
If a memory foam mattress is on your list of things to buy, compare things like foam density, memory foam comfort layer depths, and latex core support. Figure out the lowest standard for your needs and shy away from picking the lowest cost model. It is true that you often get exactly what you pay for.
